San Francisco-based Got Produce? has developed a way to grow root vegetables, including carrots, hydroponically.
Because of their rapid growth rate, carrots were used as a beta test for other root crops, according to a news release.
Like other crops, carrots require a specific moisture-to-air ratio.
The achieve this, the firm cut Styrofoam blocks in various shapes, most commonly square and round.
Carrots were grown from seed in the mold using hydroponic irrigation systems.
Once the carrots were ready to harvest, the molds were turned upside down to release the vegetables.
Got Produce? franchises its greenhouses and technology both nationally and internationally.
