Two University of Florida Extension efforts that help educate citrus growers have been recognized with merit awards.
Mongi Zekri, a multi-county citrus Extension agent in southwest Florida and based in LaBelle, was one of three recipients of the Seymour Goldweber Extension Professional and Enhancement Award in August.
Also receiving the award was Sanjay Shukla, an agricultural and biological engineer with a focus on water at the Southwest Florida Research and Education Center in Immokalee, and William Kern, an entomologist at the Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center in Davies.
The award provides a term professorship to an outstanding state or county Extension faculty member who has developed an educational program that contributes to making the Extension Service the best in the nation, according to a news release.
The Citrus Extension Agent Team received the James App Award, which is presented to the most outstanding Extension team during the past year.
The citrus group was chosen due to its "relentless and comprehensive team efforts to educate the citrus industry about HLB (huanglongbing) management and other production issues as the industry goes through a difficult time," according to the release.
Zekri also is part of the team.
