More than 118 million pounds of avocados were sold in the U.S. in support of Fourth of July festivities this year, a record for the holiday.
Actual sales far surpassed the projection for Independence Day 2017, which was 100 million, according to a news release.
Fourth of July sales this year were up about 20% from last year. Memorial Day also saw more than 118 million pounds of avocados sold.
“Increasingly we are seeing consumers associate avocados with the American summer holidays, specifically the Fourth of July,” said Jan DeLyser, vice president of marketing for the California Avocado Commission. “Demand has been strong, which encouraged additional supply to market in support of the holiday promotions.”
