Nothing is sacred when it comes to reducing California's $29 billion budget shortfall.
Among the possible cost-savings state leaders are considering is the elimination of the California Department of Food and Agriculture.
The department has an annual budget of about $315 million.
Of that, about $54 million comes from federal funds and another $163 million from user fees collected from the agricultural sector.
The state general fund budget contributes about $98 million, with $66 million directed to plant health and pest prevention, with the remainder going to animal health, emergency activities and measurement-standard activities.
