More than 18,000 U.S. farms—or slightly more than a quarter of the vegetable producers—market their wares directly to consumers.

Between 1997 and 2007, the amount of vegetables and melons grew by 97 percent, reaching $335 million in 2007, according to the U.S. Agricultural Census.
