While conditions remained mostly favorable in much of Texas, soil-moisture levels in the eastern portion were dropping at an alarming rate, and vegetable growers are beginning to suffer, according to Texas AgriLife Extension Service personnel.


One 10-acre watermelon field, for example, had few if any fruit. By now, the melons should be 10 to 12 inches long.
