The global economic downturn has finally hit the California nut industry, with prices for almonds and walnuts skidding.

Prices for pistachios still remain relatively strong because of a short crop and a global shortage.

Almond growers, who harvested a record 1.3 billion pound crop, remain optimistic that the credit crunch will ease and will help move the crop.
