The economy continues to take its toll on shipments of California wines.

In 2009, California vintners shipped the equivalent of 197 million cases to the U.S. wind market, up only 0.2 percent from the previous year's volume.

The retail value of those shipments was $17.9 billion, down 3 percent from 2008 as consumers traded down, according to a news release from the San Francisco-based Wine Institute.
