HLB Specialties is now importing organic formosa papayas.
Pompano Beach, Fla.-based HLB is now shipping both conventional and organic formosas “in substantial quantities” year-round, according to a news release.
According to 2015 Fresh Trends research from The Packer cited by Melissa Hartmann de Barros, the company’s director of communications, there is considerable overlap between papaya shoppers and organic shoppers.
About 39% of people who bought papayas also bought organic produce, and among the 56 commodities studied, papayas showed the second-largest growth in organic purchases, according to the research.
All papayas marketed by HLB are non-GMO and have not been irradiated. The company’s golden caliman papayas from Brazil are Fair Trade-certified.
A new sticker on HLB’S papayas includes a ripeness indicator that shows consumers what color papayas turn when they’re sweet and ripe.
“Consumers love the ripeness indicator because it helps them find the right fruit for them,” Hartmann de Barros said in the release. “This is especially useful for people who are trying papayas for the first time.”
