More than 100 growers, packers, shippers, retailers, researchers and other interested parties helped craft the recently released updated metrics for tomato food safety.

Known officially as the "Food Safety Programs and Auditing Protocol for the Fresh Tomato Supply Chain, 2009," the four sets of documents outline steps and practices the industry should take to reduce the incidence of foodborne illness.

They are broken down into open field production, harvest and field packing; greenhouse; packinghouse; and repacking and distribution.
