Retail sales of tomatoes have not recovered fully from the food safety scare of this summer, according to a report from the United Fresh Produce Association.

The Food and Drug Administration advisories against eating round tomatoes, coupled with rising produce prices in general, prompted consumers to back away from tomato purchases.

Round tomatoes were erroneously linked to an outbreak of Salmonella Saintpaul that sickened more than 1,000 people nationwide.
