Nearly 200 years after Thomas Jefferson planted more than 30 European winegrape varieties in Virginia, Virginia Tech researchers are working to help the area's winegrape industry.


Extension specialists at the university's Alson H. Smith Jr. Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Winchester, are involved with projects to improve grape quality and increase grape-cropping efficiency, according to a news release.


They also are looking at canopy development and evaluating technology to improve wine quality.
