Santa is asking; What do you want (for the industry)?

Tom KarstMy brother Doug told me about the viral video on the WestJet Airlines “Santa Claus in an airport kiosk.” It’s worth a watch, if you haven’t seen it yet. Check out the story and video here.

Upon the scanning of a flyer’s boarding pass, the jolly WestJet Santa Claus asked both adult and child what they wanted for Christmas. Indulging the Santa for the sake of the kids, one couple asked for a big screen television, while a child asked for a train, and a pitiable guy asked for socks and underwear.

While the flight was in the air, WestJet employees at the flight’s destination city fled to the mall and Best Buy to shop for what was requested of Santa. When the four-hour flight landed, the already-wrapped gifts were sent down the chute at baggage claim.

As you can imagine, this unexpected Christmas cheer was met with joy and much emotion.

True, the man that modestly asked socks and underwear may not have been as excited as “ask and you shall receive” couple who landed the 50 inch big screen television. Given the millions of Web views, this public relations gimmick was a stroke of genius.

If it were only so easy to get what we want.

Suspending disbelief for a moment; if you could ask Santa for a gift on your behalf to the produce industry for 2014, what would it be?

More government assistance, less government interference, one national trade association, prompt-paying customers, a strong economy, fewer food safety audits, an immigration bill, farm bill reauthorization? Something else?

Take a lesson from the guy who got socks and underwear ; dream big, because Santa may really be listening.

Biting sarcasm in that last remark, or did I miss the meaning?
