"Setting the record straight" on Prop. 37

National Editor Tom Karst If you haven't read a vigorous debate on California's Proposition 37, check out the Fresh Produce Industry Discussion Group thread here.

There have been 37 comments so far on the debate, with passionate views on both sides. It may be the measure that would label GM food is doomed.   A recent poll puts the ballot measure on the short side of voter approval, with about 50% opposed and 39% in favor in surveys conducted in late October.

But the fight isn't over yet. This morning my inbox had this email about a press conference today featuring Andrew Kimbrell, Executive Director, Center for Food Safety, Ken Cook, President, Environmental Working Group and Michael Hansen, PhD, Senior Scientist, Consumers Union.

It read:

Today at 11:00 a.m. PDT, leading consumer groups will present new evidence on the false and misleading claims of the “No on 37” campaign. The world’s largest pesticide and junk food companies are waging a high-stakes, big money campaign designed to hide their altering of our food and persuade California voters to kill the citizen’s ballot initiative to label genetically engineered foods.
Experts will discuss the No on 37 campaign’s repeated efforts to mislead voters by:
•    misrepresenting leading science, government, professional and academic organizations, including the National Academy of Sciences and World Health Organization;
•    making repeated false statements in advertisements; and
•    deceiving voters with mailers sent by obvious front groups.
They will also set the record straight on the scientific and regulatory issues surrounding genetically engineered foods, and will debunk false claims about Proposition 37 involving costs, lawsuits and exemptions.

TK: There is no shortage of politicians and interest groups wanting to "set the record straight" on Prop. 37 and all manner of ballot contests. We will hold our breath and see what Wednesday brings.
