Workers for DiMare Co. pick tomatoes in the Coachella Valley, where harvesting started May 8, says Jeff Dolan, field operations manager. A prolonged spate of wet weather through late winter and early spring pushed some Northern Calfiornia tomato plantings back, so some volume will be later than usual this year, says Joe Bernardi, president of Bernardi & Associates. Growers are looking at a June 19 start instead of the normal June 10 start, he says.
