Growers continue to stretch the west Mexico produce season with technology and varieties. Italian squash seedlings were transported in temperature-controlled trucks from Rio Rico, Ariz.-based Farmer’s Best International LLC greenhouse operations in Culiacán, Mexico, to fields on the coast of Hermosillo, where they were planted and continue to grow, says Leonardo Tarriba, general manager. The company offers Italian, yellow and gray squash. Squash season runs from late February to mid-June. “We are expecting them to meet and exceed our quality standards and grow to an impressive size,” he says. Volume should be similar to last year.
West Mexico deal in expansion mode

Slowly but surely, the west Mexico deal has expanded over the years.

“The growing conditions have been ideal, the availability of product has been huge, and consequently, markets have been very depressed,” says Mike Aiton, director of marketing for Coachella, Calif.-based Prime Time International.
