Andy Shoemaker just couldn’t keep away from the business.
After more than four years of retirement, Shoemaker re-entered the produce industry workforce Jan. 1, joining Marvin’s Produce LLC, Greer, S.C., as chief operations officer.
“I was burning too much gas in the boat,” Shoemaker said with a laugh. “Produce is in my blood, and I missed the hunt.”
Shoemaker had retired from his senior vice president position in 2015, at Taylor Fresh Foods Inc., Salinas, Calif. He was living in Charleston, S.C.
He has worked in the food sales and marketing business for 30 years after graduating from Flagler College, St. Augustine, Fla., in business administration and marketing. Since then, Shoemaker has worked in foodservice national account development, contracting, market share and branding — and was a key contributor in helping build a multi-billion produce supplier.
His goal at Marvin’s Produce: “I want to sustain and build the Greenville and surrounding markets,” Shoemaker said.
Also, Rita Jones joined Marvin’s Produce as chief financial officer in early 2018. A family member of the owners, Jones has previously worked in governmental finance.
