A new partnership will allow independent grocers to adopt mobile checkout for free during the COVID-19 crisis. ( AWG and FutureProof Retail )

Kansas City, Kan.-based Associated Wholesaler Grocers and FutureProof Retail have partnered to provide FPR’s mobile checkout solution to AWG member retailers.

The technology allows shoppers to use their phones to scan and bag items as they shop, according to a news release. Shoppers can then pay with their phone and skip the checkout line.

While there is still a national state of emergency, FutureProof Retail is donating its solution to retailers. Beyond the crisis, AWG members will receive “preferential” pricing, according to the release. Along with mobile checkout, the service enables ordering of prepared food or deli items and a notification when the items are ready.

AWG member McKeever’s Enterprises is already using the technology in its stores.

“We are always looking for ways to enhance our customers’ experience and make their shopping trip quick and more efficient,” Tim Cosens, director of merchandising, marketing and technology for McKeever, said in the release. “We felt FPR’s solution was the perfect fit to accomplish that mission.”

Stacey Bowen, vice president of sales and solutions for AWG, also endorsed the technology.

“FutureProof Retail’s self-scanning solution helps our members compete favorably in all markets served because it allows independent supermarkets to eliminate wait times at checkout and service counters, and it also enables social distancing in stores,” Bowen said in the release. “It provides all required features out of the box and is easy to adapt and integrate into the existing store systems and processes.”
