California Giant Berry Farms, Watsonville, will its hold its 12th skirt steak barbecue on July 17 to benefit eight local charities.
“In one day, we make about 1,200 lunches in our building and we sell them,” said Cindy Jewell, vice president of marketing.
“The whole company gets involved,” she said, as friends in the industry and people from throughout the community turn out to munch on steak, garlic bread, salad, strawberries and desserts.
Some customers and suppliers who can’t come in person pay for lunches and donate them to the local Loaves and Fishes organization.
Others come by and pick up as many as 20 or 30 lunches and take them back to their offices to share, she said.
‘We typically raise about $15,000, and our owners match it every year, so we donate $30,000 every year from this barbecue,” Jewell said.
“It’s hard work, but it’s lots of fun,” she said.
