The first of three public meetings on new proposed food safety rules from the Food and Drug Administration is scheduled for Sept. 19-20.
Covering the proposed rules on foreign supplier verification programs and accreditation of third party auditors, the two-day meeting will be at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C., according to a news release from FDA.
Locations and dates for the other two meetings on the proposed rules have not been set.
The purpose of the meeting is to outline the proposed rules and take comments. The Foreign Supplier Verification Programs proposal sets requirements for importers to verify that their foreign suppliers have the food safety practices mandated by the Food Safety Modernization Act. The rule on the Accreditation of Third-Party Auditors/Certification Bodies aims to boost the quality, objectivity and transparency of foreign food safety audits, according to the release.
