The Food and Drug Administration has new guidelines to help companies develop and implement a written recall plan.

According to an FDA news release, the Food Safety Modernization Act’s Preventive Controls for Human Food rule calls for food facilities to have recall documents that include plans for:

  • Notifying buyers/receivers of what’s recalled and how to return or dispose of it;Notifying the public about hazards from the food;
  • Conducting effectiveness checks to verify recalls are carried out; and
  • Disposing of the recalled product without causing a safety concern.

In the document, the FDA gives recommendations for recall plans and FDA resources available to assist with the plans.
