After 17 years at City of Industry-based FreshPoint Southern California, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sysco Corp., president Verne Lusby retired July 1.
Randy Slentz, general manager and senior vice president of Modesto, Calif.-based Save Mart Supermarkets, was named to succeed him.
Lusby said in mid-June he was leaving at a time when “the produce industry in Southern California is booming.”
And that applies to the foodservice segment as well.
“It seems like there is a restaurant opening every day — maybe more,” he said.
Lusby said he experienced some major transitions over the years, including year-round availability of most categories, greater emphasis on food safety and increased demand for locally grown produce.
FreshPoint is four times larger today than it was when Lusby joined the company in 2001, he said, and offers more than 1,000 produce stock-keeping units.
“If it grows in the ground, we sell it,” he said.
