Castroville, Calif.-based Ocean Mist Farms is marketing its first Frost Kissed artichokes of the season.

The Frost Kissed artichokes are currently being shipped to retailers and will be available for the next several weeks, according to a news release.

When the temperature drops below freezing, the artichokes’ skin darkens, which the release said seals in more flavor and provides a nuttier taste. While Frost Kissed artichokes have a slightly darker exterior, the brown outer layer falls off once cooked. That results in the soft, green artichoke shoppers are familiar with, according to the release.

“The appearance of Frost Kissed artichokes is strictly cosmetic and doesn’t reflect the quality,” Diana McClean, senior director of marketing at Ocean Mist Farms, said in the release. “While these artichokes are not as vibrant in color, they offer a limited-time flavor that many shoppers look forward to experiencing after a frost.”

Ocean Mist Farms is providing recipe inspiration through its social media channels, according to the release. The Frost Kissed artichokes also will carry a petal insert so shoppers can easily recognize them, according to the release, and also provide display cards to retail customers who stock Frost Kissed artichokes.

“The Frost Kissed artichokes are such a seasonal treat as we don’t see a freeze every season,” McClean said in the release. “We’re working hard to ensure our shoppers are educated on ways to prep the artichoke so they too can enjoy its unique flavor for a limited time when they are available.”

Ocean Mist has a web page available for Frost Kissed artichokes.
