Dublin-based Fyffes Ltd. is sharing its strategies of adding value and sustainability at Fruit Logistica.
The annual expo is Feb. 5-7 in Berlin.
Fyffes markets conventional, organic and fair trade bananas, shipping 70 million boxes of bananas a year, according to a news release. The company’s portfolio also includes melons, pineapples, mushrooms, avocados and a new Fyffes Exotics range of ethically sourced produce.
“Our customer concepts for our clients and consumers so far include singles, bananas for kids and sustainable packaging,” Joris Schonk, Fyffes Europe commercial director, said in the release.
The sustainability strategy has pillars linked to the United Nations’ sustainable development goals.
The Fyffes Discover More program addresses ethics and consumer engagement, providing clients and consumers with insight into how Fyffes products are grown.
Blockchain technology is used in the development of climate-neutral bananas in partnership with Dutch supermarket chain PLUS, and technology partner Supply Chain Information Management — enabling customers and consumers to have reliable data and transparency about the different stages in their chain. The blockchain also contains information about when the bananas were harvested and includes social impact, certifications and the carbon dioxide footprint along the supply chain.
