Los Angeles-based The Giumarra Cos. was adding five avocado ripening rooms to the three existing rooms already in operation at its Escondido, Calif., location, said Gary Caloroso, business development director.

Giumarra has ripening facilities at eight locations throughout the U.S., he said, and pre-ripens “a significant amount” of its avocado volume.

“We ripen every day for retailers and foodservice,” Caloroso said.

Displaying pre-ripened fruit in the supermarket can boost sales, since some consumers want avocados to eat right away, while others may want to wait a few days, he said.

“It’s good for retailers to offer the option,” he said.
