Eurofins Scientific is opening a food testing laboratory complex in Fresno, Calif., this summer.
The 11,000-square-foot microbiology lab in the Central Valley is designed to offer fast quality assessments and microbial testing services for food companies, including fresh produce companies.
The lab features an innovative and unique design layout, according to a news release. Air flow control, and pass-through control rooms to limit the potential for sample contamination.
“Eurofins provides the highest level of attention and commitment to the integrity of our testing services,” Joelle Mosso, a business unit manager at Eurofins, said in the release. “we understand the
importance of your samples and you can trust us to design only the best systems to provide your results.”
The lab offers rapid molecular analysis, with results for pathogesns in as little as 24 hours. Tests for salmonella, listeria, E. coli and other pathogens will be conducted on-site. The lab will also provide services for dairy producers, according to the release.
Eurofins food lab services, according to its website, include:
- Field and orchard testing, with the ability to use GPS coordinates to sample fruits and vegetables in a specific area;
- Packinghouse inspections and traceability of products; and
- Container inspection at point-of-origin and arrival.
Eurofins has six food labs in California, including one in Gilroy. Overall, the company has more than 400 labs in 44 countries, although most of them are not related to testing of foods.
The lab is currently taking samples that would go to “sister labs” in the region, Mosso said, but it’s not yet received the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certification necessary for complete micro testing yet. That’s expected in September, and the company plans to conduct tours there. Also in September, the company plans to host a Food Safety Auditor public training course at the lab.
