Fresh Del Monte Produce Inc., Coral Gables, Fla., has promoted Hans Sauter at its first chief sustainability officer.

Sauter has been with the company since 1998, when he was a senior director of agricultural extension and new developments. Since then, his titles have included vice president of agricultural services and special projects, vice president of research and development and agricultural services, and senior vice president of research and development, quality assurance and agricultural services.

He will “maintain and advance projects and partnerships that commit to the health and wellbeing of our planet,” according to a news release.

“If there is anything I’ve learned during my time with Del Monte, it is that we have to keep our eyes to the future,” Sauter said in the release. “We want to expand our sustainability initiatives and commit to our performance, people, and our planet. That’s how we build a Better World Tomorrow.”

According to Del Monte Fresh Produce’s 2019 Corporate Sustainability Report, the company is focusing on:

  • Sustainably sourced products;
  • Greenhouse gas emission reduction;
  • Protecting wildlife;
  • Promoting growth of communities; and 
  • Applying responsible farming techniques to preserve land and water.
