Avocado marketer Index Fresh, Riverside, Calif., is preparing for an extended California avocado season.

Ample rainfall last winter brought on a strong bloom for the 2020 harvest, according to the company, which will ship California fruit from late winter through early fall.

Index Fresh continues to lead grower seminars on improved irrigation methods, pruning, pollination and other production processes. January seminars will cover information on the California and import crops, and handling practices.

“Index Fresh has been working hard with growers through seminars to help increase per-acre production in California,” Giovanni Cavaletto, vice president of sourcing, said in a news release. “Harvest coordination is key, and how we harvest this season can have direct results on the 2021 crop.”

This is the third year for Index Fresh’s Gem avocado line, with plans to double volume, Cavaletto said in the release, with a late winter rollout.

Gem avocados are a larger, bright green fruit with golden speckles on the thick skin, which darkens as the fruit ripens, according to the release.

“Index Fresh has developed special promotions and point-of-sale materials for the Gem season,” according to the release.
