California avocado company Fresh Index is reporting excellent quality, which is driving strong demand in retail and foodservice operations.

The California season continues into September, and demand should carry into heavy promotion periods for the Fourth of July and Labor Day, according to Dana Thomas, Index Fresh president and CEO, in a news release.

“The 2018 California season is off to a strong start, with tremendous opportunity ahead for the rest of the year,” according to the release.

Index Fresh is shipping the non-hass variety GEM this year, starting in mid-April with support from retailers and growers, according to the release. The new variety presents an opportunity to “excite the consumer and expand the avocado category as a complement to hass,” according to the release.

Index Fresh, Riverside, Calif., has facilities in Texas, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Ohio, Colorado and Illinois. Earlier this year, the company started operations at a new packing, bagging and ripening facility in Pharr, Texas.
