Kingsville, Ontario-based Mastronardi Produce, which markets under the Sunset brand, received the Beacon of Light Award from the Food Bank Council of Michigan.

Mastronardi grows tomatoes and peppers at its greenhouse operation in Coldwater, Mich., and its Midwest division operates from Livonia, Mich., near Detroit.

Mastronardi was honored with the award at the annual Michigan Harvest Gathering Luncheon Nov. 8 in Lansing, according to a news release.

Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan nominated the company for the award because of more than 5 million pounds of fresh produce donated in the past year, according to the release. The donations have helped feed families at 79 schools in southeast Michigan through the Gleaners School Food Mobile Pantry.

“We are grateful for all Sunset has done and continues to do for Gleaners,” Gerry Brisson, president of Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan, said in the release. “The partnership with Sunset is dramatically advancing our shared vision of a hunger-free southeastern Michigan.”

The Michigan Harvest Gathering is an annual statewide campaign that has raised food and funds for Michigan’s emergency food response for 27 years.
