Mexican tomato grower-exporter Globalmex International Inc., which ships the Magic Sun brand throughout North America, is expanding acreage and adding more varieties.

The company has more than 160 acres of hydroponic production. It plans to expand four existing greenhouses, and add new acreage that will produce grape tomatoes, organic tomatoes on the vine (TOV) and organic beefsteak tomatoes, according to a news release.

“Organic produce continues to grow as a category and our retail and distributor partners are looking for a longer marketing window and more varieties in the program,” Alejandro Santander, vice president of sales and operations, said in the release. “As growers, we have to make decisions on our overall manifest and adjust to support our partners’ needs.”

The greenhouse expansions enable shipments of Magic Sun organic TOVs year-round, according to the release, and allows GlobalMex to introduce an organic beefsteak tomato.

More than 15 acres of grape tomatoes will be ready for harvest in September.
