More than 50,000 runners in the TCS New York City Marathon will receive New York-grown apples when they cross the finish line.
This is the New York Apple Association’s 21st year as sponsors of the famous event.
New York apples will be included in runners’ “recovery” bags, and the apple association is providing apples for marathon-related events in the week leading up to the marathon. That includes the Poland Spring Marathon KickOff, Youth Invitational, Abbott Dash to the Finish 5K and the Marathon Eve Dinner, according to a news release from the New York Apple Association.
All told, the apple organization provides more than 80,000 apples for the events.
“It just makes sense that two things that are as important to New York state as the marathon and the apple industry are to the state should pair up and would work together in this way,” New York Apple Association President Cynthia Haskins said in the release.
The association recently redesigned its brand, with the “Apples from New York” brand on promotions and television spots.
Official TCS New York City Marathon sponsors receive entries to the event. The NY apple association donates some of them to Rochester, N.Y., area firefighters to honor their service and losses during the 9-11 attack on New York, according to the release.
