Bronx, N.Y.-based online grocer FreshDirect is seeing a 46% increase in year-over-year sales for the back-to-school week that sets the tone for fall sales to come. 

FreshDirect can study customer buying habits and trends in real time and respond to shopper insights by adjusting inventory selections for the fall, according to a news release. 

The company delivers fresh produce, meat, seafood and specialty items directly to consumers in seven northeastern states.

“As a dad and former chef, I understand firsthand how families now need to provide more meals on the table, which can add stress during an already uncertain time. Our meal solutions allow families to put fresh, high-quality food on the table with added ease,” cofounder and CEO David McInerney said in the release.

Compared to this time last year, the company is experiencing:

  • 100% increase in sales of tortillas, frozen pizzas and on-the-go foods;
  • 80% increase in healthy options; and
  • 300% increase in the company’s in-house prepared kitchen appetizers.

FreshDirect has enhanced its selection of “meal hacks,” available each week through the season, according to the release. This provides solutions for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, to ease meal planning as many families prepare for children to learn remotely full-time from home or as part of a hybrid school plan.
