Ocean Spray is buying Atoka Cranberries Inc., a Canadian fresh and processed cranberry products shipper.
The Manseau, Quebec, company, owned by The Bieler Group, reached an agreement with Ocean Spray, which markets juice, fresh berries and other cranberry products from 700 grower-owners.
“Ocean Spray’s brand strength and global marketing reach, coupled with Atoka’s unique product portfolio and location, will benefit all of our farmers and expand the reach of the overall Quebec cranberry industry,” Ocean Spray CEO Randy Papadelis said in a news release.
The purchase includes Atoka’s packing/processing facility, and Ocean Spray plans to purchase Bieler Group freezer/receiving facilities this year. The Bieler group’s growing operations remain with that company, but it will become a member of the Ocean Spray Cooperative, according to the release.
Ocean Spray plans to make investments in the Atoka/Bieler Group facilities to “increase efficiency and improve yield,” according to the release.
The transaction is expected to close “in the coming weeks,” according to the release. Financial details were not released.
Atoka products include dried cranberries, including a chocolate-coated dried berry snack, and fresh cranberries.
