The Packer’s Produce Market Guide, a database of produce commodities and companies that offer them, has introduced a grower verification feature.

Growers can upload documentation necessary for transactions, such as proof of liability insurance, third-party audit data and Perishable Agricultural Commodities Act licenses, and obtain a “verified” status in the system. Wholesalers, retailers and other buyers can then search specifically for growers with that distinction.

“This new PMG tool is revolutionary ... and simple,” said Shannon Shuman, vice president and publisher for produce at Farm Journal Media, which owns The Produce Market Guide and The Packer.

“Buyers, wholesalers and retailers are telling us that management of certifications is a major hurdle in the buyer-seller relationship,” Shuman said, “so our solution aggregates all of this information in one easy-to-use resource.”

Through the platform, buyers can also save verified growers to a personal list, connect with those growers to securely access certification documents, and initiate private chat sessions with growers.

The Produce Market Guide staff is in the process of working with growers to get their documents into the system so they can be listed as verified.
