Starting with the spring crop that begins shipping in May, ProSource Inc. will be the exclusive marketer of Texas onions from Winter Garden Produce LLC, Uvalde, Texas.
The yellow, white and red onions, grown on about 400 acres, will be harvested through about June 20, according to a ProSource news release. The marketing agreement is the “perfect fit” for ProSource’s existing packing operations in Idaho and New Mexico, according to the release. ProSource is based in Hailey, Idaho.
ProsSource chief operating officer Corey Griswold said the Texas onion deal allows the company to bridge supply gaps.
“We are very excited that Winter Garden Produce and the Carnes family have chosen ProSource as the most viable option to market their fresh onion production,” Griswold said in the release. “The addition of WGP will be paramount in bridging any supply gap between our packing operations at Golden West Produce Idaho and Rio Valley Onion in New Mexico.”
The onions will still be packed in Winter Garden’s Uvalde packinghouse, in bags, boxes, reusable plastic containers and various consumer packs.
“Having ProSource as our marketing arm will allow us to concentrate on growing and packing, thus continuing the tradition of delivering the highest-quality product to the consumer,” J Carnes, president of Winter Garden Produce, a third-generation family farming operation, said in the release.
ProSource is a grower-owned and operated sales and marketing company, according to the release, with foodservice, retail, wholesale and broadline customers in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Central America.
