Kingsville, Ontario-based greenhouse grower Red Sun Farms is getting into the avocado business.
The brand for the new line will be Golden Sun Avocados. The fruit will be grown in Mexico and distributed through the Red Sun supply chain.
Avocado production is scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2018. Red Sun plans to have fruit available nearly year-round, from July 1 to June 1.
“The avocado market is absolutely booming, and it only makes sense that we would become a part of that,” chief operations officer Carlos Visconti said in a news release. “We are confident that this new commodity will be a complimentary addition to our existing product catalogue.”
The avocados will be sold in bulk, packed in cases with net weights of 4 kilograms, 6 kilograms and 11.3 kilograms.
Red Sun has traditionally specialized in tomatoes, cucumbers and bell peppers. The company owns greenhouses in Mexico, Canada and in the U.S.
“Consumers and retailers alike already associate Red Sun Farms with the very best in tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers,” Visconti said in the release. “Now we have the opportunity to provide them with the highest quality Mexican avocados, produced using the best practices as perfected from years of experience.”
