Industry veteran Robb Bertels will be the new retail category manager for Morgan Hill, Calif.-based Sakata Seed America.
Bertels most recently served as the general manager of the Salinas, Calif., branch of Amerifresh. Before that role, he worked as vice president of marketing for Oxnard, Calif.-based Mission Produce. Earlier in his career, he spent nearly two decades as publishing director and vice president of Vance Publishing, overseeing The Packer newspaper and Produce Merchandising magazine (now Produce Retailer).
In his new role, Bertels will communicate with retailers about the attributes of new products Sakata is developing and how they fit into industry trends, according to a news release.
Some of Sakata’s flavor-centric programs include Infinite Gold cantaloupe and specialty tomatoes.
“At Sakata, we strive to breed and produce varieties that benefit all levels of the supply chain,” vice president John Nelson said in the release. “Robb brings a deep understanding and respect for the industry to this role, and we look forward to focusing on streamlined communication down the supply chain to ultimately provide the best quality products to consumers.”
Bertels officially assumes his new role Aug. 12.
‘I’m very excited about working at Sakata,” Bertels said. “The company has a long history in seed production in the Americas as well as globally. What attracted me to the company is its reputation as a high-quality organization with great products, an outstanding culture and exceptional people.”
