The California Strawberry Commission plans to debut a snacking-focused marketing campaign.

From April through August, the commission will promote strawberries on social media with the hashtag #GetSnacking.

Consumers can enter a monthly contest by posting a photo of a strawberry-centric snack to Instagram with the #GetSnacking hashtag and then subscribing to the commission’s newsletter.

The organization will award prizes that encourage healthy living, including Fitbits, NutriBullets and Nike running shoes, according to the contest landing page.

Another component of the campaign will be advertisements on the All Recipes website. That element will be in place from June through August.

“We are hoping to encourage consumers to choose strawberries and swap strawberries in as a healthy and also fun and delicious snack to replace some of the other snacks,” said Chris Christian, senior vice president of the commission. “Consumers today get about 25% of their daily calories from snacks rather than at meal occasions, and snacking as a consumer trend is at an all-time high.

“We think strawberries, with their ease and their beauty and the passion and love everybody has for strawberries, will be an easy thing to promote to consumers as a healthy snack,” Christian said.
