The Nunes Co., Salinas, Calif., has elected Tom Nunes V as president of the company.
Nunes began working for the company, which markets conventional and organic produce under the Foxy brand, more than 20 years ago, after graduating from Cornell University. He has worked in many capacities at the grower-shipper co-founded by his grandfather Tom Nunes III and great-uncle Bob Nunes Sr. in 1976.
“I’ve watched Tom grow up in our business,” Bob Nunes Sr. said in a news release. “He has experienced all aspects of our organization, including production, cooling, shipping, sales and marketing.
“Most importantly, he has a passion and insatiable curiosity about our business, and constantly seeks to build on his knowledge and leadership.”
Tom Nunes III said his grandson is a “true leader in this industry and represents our families’ core values.”
Tom Nunes V succeeds his father, Tom Nunes IV, as president, who has served in that role since 2006, and will remain as executive vice president.
“It gives me great pleasure to pass to the torch on to my son,” he said in the release. “He has earned the position through hard work in all critical areas of our business and will bring new energy and leadership to our company.”
Tom Nunes V said he is honored by the confidence shown by his predecessors.
“I have been blessed with a strong family and great mentors and look forward to working with them to face the challenges of our industry, and to carry forward the traditions of this company,” he said in the release.
The Nunes family has been farming in the Salinas Valley since the early 1930s, with production branching out to Huron and Oxnard, Calif., Yuma, Ariz., and Yerington, Nev., according to the release.
