USDA approves Chile inspection siteThe U.S. Department of Agriculture"s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has approved a transitional fruit inspection station at a Dole Chile S.A. site in Coquimbo, Chile.

The site in the port city opened May 5.

"The preclearance inspections are applicable mainly for citrus, although it is possible some avocados may pass through the program," USDA spokesman Andre Bell said.

The USDA reached an agreement with the Chilean Agriculture and Livestock Service or SAG April 24.

"We visited the facility on that day and confirmed that it met the requirements needed to perform preclearance inspection operations on commodities destined for the U.S.," Bell said.
