The U.S. Department of Agriculture has filed an administrative complaint under the Perishable Agricultural Commodities Act against Forest City Weingart Produce Co.
Forest City operated on the Cleveland Produce Terminal until the end of January, when owner Andy Weingart surprised other market tenants by announcing that he was shuttering his business, The Packer reported earlier this year. Weingart was also president of the wholesale market until he closed his business.
The USDA alleges the company failed to pay $716,689 to 23 produce sellers from October 2014 through May 2017, according to a news release.
Forest City can request a hearing with the USDA, but if the adiministration rules the company to have repeatedly violated PACA, it would be barred from the produce industry for two years and its principals for a year.
