FirstFruits Marketing is using the appeal of Opal apples to fund youth groups through the Youth Make a Difference Initiative.

FirstFruits grows and markets Opals and plans to use profits from sales of the apples to help finance youth-led nonprofit organizations, according to a news release.

It’s the sixth year of the FirstFruits Marketing campaign, designed to help youth ages 6 to 25 through Youth Make a Difference, with funds going to projects that address food security, nutrition, agriculture and food education, according to the release.

“This campaign aims to inspire the next generation to make a lasting impact in their communities,” Joe Vargas of FirstFruits Marketing, Yakima, Wash., said in the release. “We’re excited to see what they are able to do to address some of today’s most significant issues such as hunger and healthy eating, food politics, and the importance of community service.”

FirstFruits is seeking application for the program, and plans to allocate $75,000 to non-profits. The program has granted more than $300,000 since it began.

Applications can be made online until Feb. 15. More information is on FirstFruit's website.

On April 12, consumers can start voting on the website for their favorite youth programs, and charities will receive funding in July, according to the release.
