The state watermelon queens helped with the NWA's annual auction, which raised hundreds of thousands for the association and more than $100,000 for Warriors for Freedom.

Watermelon shippers and allied partners were honored for their contributions to the Warriors for Freedom Foundation at the NWA convention. This year, NWA contributed about $100,000 to the group, which seeks to help military veterans and their families.

Syngenta was touting varieties with powdery mildew resistance at the NWA show, and also was talking about varieties that could be valuable for fresh-cut watermelon processors.

Rarely if ever do I meet another Karst in the produce industry, so it was great to meet and greet Brad Karst, director of agriculture products at Organix Solutions, Bloomington, Ind.
