Anthony Vineyards expands storage

Bakersfield, Calif.-based Anthony Vineyards is expanding its cold storage facilities by 50,000 square feet to accommodate new table grape varieties, said Bob Bianco, co-owner.

In all, the company now has about 20 kinds of grapes sold under 10 labels.

“They come off at (one) time and you need cold storage to process them,” Bianco said.

In addition, many big box stores now ask grower-shippers to house pack table grapes in bags and clamshells ranging from a half-pound to 4 pounds, he said.

To house-pack them, rather than pack them in the field, “you have to have big storage,” he said.

“You pack them as you sell them.”
