A patented system that improves cooling through pallets can benefit berry handlers, said Alain Garcia, sales engineer with FF Cooling Solutions.

Garcia said that with the air tightness system, the company’s high efficiency cooling cells can cool berries faster, improve consistency within the pallet, enhance shelf life and reduce energy costs.

“The investment is low: you can begin with just some cells and then increase the number of cells depending on your production,” he said.

That significantly improves the quality of fruit and reduces fruit waste, Garcia said.

“Most of our clients that have installed our cells have ordered again the next year.”

Garcia said a one-hour delay in cooling can reduces a product’s shelf life by one day, according to recent studies by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

“Berries must be cooled as fast as possible and without risk of freezing,” he said.

Garcia said the FF Cooling cells ensure a homogeneous cooling, and that will enable producers and exporters to standardize their production and to obtain the best quality for fruit in all parts of the pallet.

“Our clients have embraced this technology to refrigerate fresh fruit and make a difference in terms of flavor, texture and appearance quality in the fruit market,” he said.
