Avocado category shows 5.2% volume growth so far this year

The Hass Avocado Board reports avocado category has shown year-to-date volume growth of 5.2%, adding 45 million units to the category versus the prior year.

In the four weeks ending May 16, the avocado category recorded 177 million units in retail sales, which drove $204 million at $1.16 per unit, according to the board.

Year-to-date dollar sales, through May 16, were $942.8 million, according to the board, while year-to-date unit sales were pegged at 908.5 million.

Compared to the prior year, when the pandemic drove significant retail avocado sales, the last 4 weeks saw a volume decline of 9.5%, while dollars fell 12.2%. Avocado volume fell in all markets except Harrisburg/Scranton (+2.1%) and Tampa (+0.2%).

Comparing avocado sales for the four weeks ending May 16 compared with the corresponding period a year ago, the board report dollar sales declined 12.2%, compared to the total produce performance of a 4.4 decline for the four weeks compared with a year ago.
