Increased government labeling favored by those who consider sustainability a top priority

Six out of 10 consumers who say sustainability is a top priority for them support increased government-mandated labeling for food.

According to The Packer’s Sustainability Insights survey of 550 consumers, conducted in late July, 48% of all polled support increased government-mandated label requirements, with 40% having no opinion and 12% not in support of increased label requirements.

By way of contrast, 63% of consumers who say sustainability is a top priority say they are in support of increased government-mandated labeling requirements. Thirty-two percent of those consumers said they have no opinion on the issue, and 5% said they were not in support of increased labeling.

For consumers who consider sustainability a top priority, 48% said produce labels provide all the information they need, with 44% indicating labels provide most of the information they need and 8% saying labels do not give the information they need.

For all consumers, 34% said current labels provide all the information they need, with 56% saying labels provide most of the information they need and 11% indicating they do not give the information they need.
