$11.5 million in meth found in produce shipment
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Pharr International Bridge discovered $11.5 million in alleged methamphetamine in a shipment of mixed fresh produce from Mexico.
On Feb. 21, the tractor/trailer carrying a commercial shipment of mixed produce arrived at the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge cargo facility, and an officer referred it for further inspection, according to a CBP news release.
An examination using non-intrusive imaging showed the alleged narcotics hidden within the trailer’s floor, and CBP officers removed 305 packages of alleged meth weighing 575 pounds, according to the release.
“This is a substantial amount of hard narcotics seized from drug trafficking organizations attempting to smuggle drugs across our border,” Carlos Rodriguez, port director for Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry, said in the release.
“This significant interception will keep the drugs from reaching our communities.”
The CBP Office of Field Operations seized the tractor/trailer and the alleged drugs and Homeland Security Investigations is looking into the case.
