United Fresh honors produce advocate U.S. Rep. Sam Farr

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Despite calling himself the most liberal congressman, U.S. Rep. Sam Farr, D-Calif., said he appreciated the produce industry's support in his 24 years.

That support led to the United Fresh Produce Association honoring him and his dedication to the industry Sept. 13 at its annual Washington Conference.

United Fresh CEO Tom Stenzel said Farr, who is retiring after this term, has been a strong advocate for the produce industry from district 20, which includes Salinas, and much of the valley's crops and produce companies.

"What I love about your industry is that you're first responders on the war on poverty with nutrition," Farr said.

He said he has a very liberal background from his time in the Peace Corps, but he respects the produce industry and has been proud to protect and advance its interest in Congress.

"We're going to miss you here," Stenzel said.
